Brush Dollanan: A Font That Breathes Life Into Branding

I was staring at a blank brand board, the usual suspects—clean sans serifs and elegant scripts—already on the table. The client wanted something that felt real, personal, and a little bit rebellious. They were launching a small boutique that sells handmade skincare products, and they wanted their brand to reflect the warmth and authenticity of their craft.

As I scrolled through my font library, I came across Brush Dollanan. At first glance, it looked like a hand-scribbled doodle given life. The font has this visceral energy, like it was drawn with a paintbrush instead of a pen. The strokes are bold and ebullient, with a raw charm that feels almost alive. It’s not the kind of font you’d use for a corporate brochure, but it definitely has a story to tell.

The First Mockup

I started by testing Brush Dollanan in a logo draft. I paired it with a simple, geometric sans serif to balance its expressive nature. The result was unexpected—there was a playful yet professional feel that made the logo stand out. It wasn’t too flashy, but it had character.

What struck me most was how the font worked on different surfaces. On a business card, it felt warm and inviting. On a packaging mockup, it added a touch of personality without overpowering the design. It was clear that Brush Dollanan could be used in multiple ways, from headline text to supporting details.

Testing Readability and Visual Hierarchy

One of the first things I considered was readability. Since Brush Dollanan is a script font, I knew it wouldn’t work well for long blocks of text. But that didn’t matter much for this project—the branding needed to be expressive, not necessarily informative. Still, I tested it on various sizes and backgrounds to ensure it remained legible.

I found that Brush Dollanan works best as a display font or headline font. It’s perfect for short phrases, taglines, and logos. When used in larger sizes, it retains its charm and doesn’t lose clarity. However, I noticed that in smaller sizes, especially on digital platforms, it can become a bit less readable. That’s something to keep in mind when designing for web or mobile.

Font Pairing and Design Consistency

To maintain visual harmony, I paired Brush Dollanan with a clean, modern sans serif. This created a nice contrast between the expressive and the structured. It helped the brand feel grounded while still having a creative edge.

For the website header, I used Brush Dollanan as the primary font, complemented by a secondary sans serif for body text. The combination worked well, adding personality without overwhelming the user experience.

I also considered how the font would look in different contexts. On Instagram posts, it added a handcrafted feel that aligned with the brand’s aesthetic. On product labels, it gave the packaging a unique identity that stood out on shelves.

Practical Advice for Real Projects

If you’re considering using Brush Dollanan for your next project, start by testing it in a few different scenarios. Try it on a logo, a social media post, and a product label. See how it behaves in different sizes and environments. It’s easy to fall in love with a font, but it’s important to make sure it serves the brand’s goals.

Also, check the included styles and alternates. Some fonts come with multiple weights or ligatures that can add more versatility. Make sure you understand the licensing terms, especially if you’re planning to use it commercially.

When pairing Brush Dollanan with other fonts, experiment with contrasts. A serif font can add sophistication, while a sans serif brings balance. A modern script font might give the design a more contemporary feel. The key is to find a balance that feels natural and intentional.

Designing for Real Life

As I continued working on the brand identity, I realized that Brush Dollanan wasn’t just a font—it was a voice. It spoke to the brand’s values: creativity, authenticity, and individuality. It helped create a visual language that felt true to the client’s vision.

From the initial mockups to the final brand materials, Brush Dollanan played a central role. It brought a sense of warmth and personality to everything we designed. Whether it was on a shop sign, a label sticker, or an Instagram post, it consistently delivered the right tone and feel.

Working with Brush Dollanan reminded me that typography isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about communication. A great font can make a brand feel more relatable, memorable, and authentic. And in this case, Brush Dollanan did exactly that.
